Services for Viola Hatfield Smith, 68, Norman who died early today in Norman Regional Hospital of complications due to rheumatoid arthritis will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mayes Chapel of Remembrance with Dr. Glenn W. Doak officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetary.

Born Aug. 13, 1918, in Oklahoma City, she was a 1934 graduate of Classen High School and attended Oklahoma City University, UCLA and the University of Oklahoma, where she received her bachelor's degree in Education in 1938. In 1979, she retired after 20 years of teaching government to seniors at Norman High School. She also taught at Wanette, Duncan and Ardmore.

During World War II, she was a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy in New Orleans. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Tau social sororities, PEO chapter DZ, Delta Kappa Gamma and the First Presbyterian Church of Norman.

Gov. George Nigh proclaimed July 2, 1985, "Viola Smith Day in Oklahoma," and his proclamation was presented to her before the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Micah P. Smith Jr.; two daughters, Julia Annette Dennis of Norman and Carla Marie White of Moore; two granddaughters; and her mother-in- law, Julia B. Smith of Norman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Nettie Hatfield.

The family suggests contributions in expression of sympathy be made to the charity of the donor's choice or to the Arthritis Foundation, Oklahoma Chapter, 3313 Classen Boulevard, Oklahoma City, Ok. 73118.
